Thirsty Thursday: Lemonade (with Tequila)

Thirsty Thursday. April 28th. One day after Beyoncé kicked off the Formation World Tour in Miami. Warm weather is so close we can taste it. And after last weekend's album release, the other thing we're tasting is Lemonade. Or is it Tea? (Anyone who's listened to the album will get that reference. If you don't, stop reading this and go listen to it now. Seriously.)

Anyway. It only feels appropriate so share a Lemonade cocktail recipe today, so without further adieu: The Lemonade (and Cuervo) cocktail. All you need to make a pitcher this simple sipper is the juice of 8 lemons, 1/2 cup of simple syrup and 4oz of tequila. Stir together with ice and refrigerate. To serve, add a sprig of mint (if you're feeling fancy) and get in formation.

A little note to all of you loyal and dear readers and friends. As you know, MOGBLOG is one year old now (yay!) and I just had a birthday over the weekend. Hello 27. And in light of these milestones, and with the continued desire to step my game up for you, I'm going to be taking a brief hiatus before relaunching a brand-new more user-friendly site, full of completely fresh content! It's very exciting, and something I've wanted to do for a long time - but it's a large undertaking, and I appreciate your patience until its ready. In the meantime, you can keep up with all of my antics on Snapchat @mogblog. Don't miss me too much, kids! Cheers! X

2015 Year in Review

Happy hump day, and happy almost 2016, friends! I hope you all had the merriest holidays, and have enjoyed your time off with family, friends and loved ones. I know I did. At this time of year, when so many are already looking forward to their juice cleanses, gym memberships, and resolutions, I find it's always a good idea to take a moment to appreciate just how much can be accomplished in a year.

That's why, I'm sharing my 15 favorite moments of 2015. At the risk of sounding "too real" - which, is that even a thing? We're friends now. I can be real with you. Right? - 2015 wasn't the most phenomenal year of my life. That's why it's all the more important (and dare I say, therapeutic?) to take a moment to appreciate some of the good things that we experienced together this year. Check it out:

The year began as I returned back to LA from my holiday visits back east, and taking a huge leap with my career. Leaving my position with a women's luxury brand to pursue work as a full-time independent stylist. It was big and scary and exciting and stressful and every other thing you could imagine, but. It's what brought me to connect with all of you, because shortly thereafter...

1- I started #MOGBLOG. And the rest, they say, is history. Or her-story, if you prefer.

2- Just after that, I was fortunate enough to participate in the International Style Institute, with celebrity stylist, Anita Patrickson. It was there that I learned to hone my skills, and make some fantastic friends and connections that I'm sure I will have for life.

3- After that, another chance to work with some of the best in the biz - the Simply Stylist conference. I must say, meeting VS Angel Alessandra Ambrosio was the icing on the cake at that event.

4- Then, as timing, and life would have it. My dear friend, teen heartthrob, and former CMU Drama classmate, John Garet Stoker, attended the MTV Movie Awards, where I had the opportunity to dress him for the red carpet. (Though the carpet was actually blue, but I'm not splitting hairs, here.)

5- And, as these things seem to serendipitously happen in LA, I was fortunate enough to work with international sensation Ruby Rose on a shoot for Marie Claire magazine. She rode to set in the front seat of my Subaru, and told me I smelled good. So.

6- As summer creeped up on me, I was able to be starstruck by another one of my beauty idols - hanging out with the amazing Emily Weiss (of ITG fame) at her Glossier Popup in Santa Monica.

7- When July was upon us, I traveled back east to join one of my BFFs for her wedding day. It was truly a magical experience that ended with myself and old college friends stripping down to our skivvies and diving into a pool at 3am. A night I will truly remember forever. Somehow. (One too many margaritas, trust me.)

8- Once I was back in LA, I met and mingled with the founders of my favorite magazine, at the JarryMag Social in Venice. They are geniuses, creating a beautiful publication that centers around three of my very favorite things. Men + Food + Men. I'm looking forward to what they bring into my life in 2016.

9- Later in the summer, my skincare prowess somehow snagged me an invite to the Clarisonic Men's launch party at Baxter Barbershop, where I was fortunate enough to meet the founder of one of the most influential skincare brands of the last decade, Dr. Robb.

10- And then, to my surprise and amazement, while flipping through the pages of Allure Magazine, I found myself and my work featured in a full page article for my stint with ISI from earlier in the year. Imagine my excitement when I realized I was also in the very same issue as my queen, Beyonce. Pinching myself. Still. Srsly.

11- By October, after what was a very emotionally taxing, and challenging drive, I made the move back east, to the city of brotherly love. Where I am so happy to be today, looking ahead to the future. Philadelphia freedom, babe.

12 & 13- It was then that I was able to collaborate with American Eagle and be featured on the AEO Style Blog - not once, but twice! ...To be honest, High School Me is still not over this one.

14- And, in an effort to give back, as I like to do every November, with your help, we raised $150 to donate to Movember, and support men's health initiatives. I am truly so thankful for your help with that, and it brings me such joy to come together and give back with all of you.

15- Finally, as the year draws to a close, I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts, opinions, and (often lame) jokes with each and every one of you. If you made it this far, you are a hero, and I thank you. From the bottom of my heart. I wish so desperately to be able to share with you my exciting news, but you'll have to wait til next year for that one! Stay tuned.

In the meantime. I want to wish each and every one of you reading this the happiest and healthiest 2016. This new year, Set yourself goals, achieve and surpass them, take risks, but don't be hard on yourself when you don't succeed, laugh a lot, love even more, stop and smell those roses. And when given the option, always go back for seconds. Cheers. x

SimplyStylist LA

Sunday Funday is here, and I'm so excited to share with you my experience at the SimplyStylist LA conference yesterday! Having previously attended the International Style Institute last month and having the time of my life - I knew that I had high hopes for this event. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Not one bit.

The day began with a VIP brunch, sponsored by Barney's, and hosted by their fashion director, Tomoko Ogura. Complimentary Barney's giftcards were served with a side of mimosas - so you know I was on board.

Following brunch, E! News Host Catt Sadler moderated a discussion with keynote speaker (and Victoria's Secret Angel-turned-Designer Alessandra Ambrosio. And yes - she is that beautiful in real life. The day continued on with panels featuring designers (Michael Costello, creator of Beyonce's stunning white Grammys gown), hair and makeup artists (Joey Maalouf of Rachel Zoe fame) and bloggers (Bravo's Stassi Schroeder). It was so inspiring to hear people from all aspects of the industry speak of their success and challenges along the way.

The afternoon session was a brand-immersion experience, giving us the unique opportunity to have one-on-one time with a number of exciting up-and-coming fashion, beauty and technology brands. (I'm particularly proud of the braid I was given by the stylists at ESalon.)

Finishing the day, we walked away with VIP SWAG BAGS - VALUED AT OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS! I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL OF THE GOODIES WE RECEIVED IN THE COMING WEEKS, SO STAY POSTED for more! So happy to have shared this day with fellow bloggers and influencers, and can't wait for the next opportunity to be together again.

The Most Delicious Bread You'll Ever Eat.

Good morning, all! I hope you had a fun kick off to your weekend, boy have I got something to share with you. Maybe you're laying in bed after a Friday night bender and are thinking about the perfect recovery meal. Or maybe you're up bright eyed and bushy tailed looking for a project to do while your S/O is sleeping in (ahem...I know this blogger is.)

Regardless of your situation, if you find yourself with a couple free hours this weekend and want to challenge yourself with a new endeavor, this is it. Actually, even if you don't have a couple hours to spare, I bet you'll find a way to free some up after you check out this recipe below.

Scary bread-making disclaimer here: I know that at first glance, this seems complicated and maybe a little daunting, but I promise if you follow the directions (I mean REALLY follow them) You will end up with the most delicious homemade bread you will ever eat. (I know - shame on a fashion blogger to write about eating carbs...We all have our vices, okay?)

I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below. I can't wait for you to try this and to tell me how it goes! And as always, SUBSCRIBE to #MOGBLOG for your chance to win our giveaway this week!

Half-Wheat Sandwich Bread

Ingredients

1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons instant active dry yeast

Instructions

1. Start by combining your flours in a medium bowl. (Note: when filling your measuring cups, spoon the flour into them, then level them off. This will keep them from being packed too dense.)
2. Next, in a small bowl, prep your milk, oil, honey, brown sugar and salt. I like to give them a stir with a fork to help them combine.
3. After that - and THIS IS IMPORTANT: In a large bowl, pour in your warm water (if you have a food thermometer, use it to check the temperature. 110-115F is Perfect.) THEN, pour in your small bowl of liquids/sugar. Give it a good stir so the sugars dissolve.
4. Once you have done that, sprinkle your yeast over the warm beige liquid, give it a little stir, and begin slowly adding your flours.
5. While you're adding your flours, keep stirring (again, I like to use a fork here) until it starts to come together, and a dough begins to form.
6. Once it starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl, its time to get your hands dirty and KNEAD. Spend a solid 10 minutes just folding and pressing the dough on a floured surface, or until you are able to form it into a smooth ball.
7. Place the ball of dough in a bowl sprayed with nonstick spray, and put it somewhere warm to rise for an hour (I like to put it in my oven with the door closed - heat off.)
8. After its about doubled in size, punch the dough down, and really show it who's boss. (I always thought kneading it so much would make it tough and chewy, but its actually the opposite. Who knew?)
9. When you have flattened it down to where it looks like pizza dough, gently roll it into a loaf shape, tucking the ends under. Place the loaf in a sprayed nonstick 9 x 5 pan. Allow it to rise one more time (This time should be shorter - maybe 45 minutes or so.) Now's a good time to preheat your oven to 350.
10. Once its done rising a second time, coat the top of the loaf with a bit of olive oil, using a pastry brush and place it in the oven to bake for 30 - 35 minutes. The loaf will be done when it sounds hollow to tap on the bottom of the pan.

Let it cool about 5 minutes in its pan, then turn the loaf out onto a wire rack to cool the rest of the way. After that - Slice and enjoy THE MOST DELICIOUS BREAD YOU'LL EVER EAT.

#MOGBLOG Home: Candles for Every Budget

Happy Friday, readers! I hope you're all excited about heading into the first weekend of Spring! (Even if it doesn't feel very spring-like yet). At this time of year, I'm always tempted to open the windows and let in some fresh air. But, if your weather won't cooperate, I know it can feel a little stale after those long winter months indoors.

Presenting our first #MOGBLOG HOME post: Candles for every budget. Here to ease you out of winter and into spring with some fragrances that are sure to keep your home smelling fresh and clean...even if you aren't ready to throw open the shutters quite yet. Check below for links to shop - and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to #MOGBLOG for your chance to win our #MOGBLOG GIVEAWAY.

$ - White Barn Candle Company
Available at your local Bath & BodyWorks, these candles are the best every-day option for when you're on a budget, but are looking for a high quality candle that has a good burning time. At just $22 for a 14.5oz Three Wick Candle, they really are a steal. Some of my favorite scents are: LeavesMahogany Teakwood, and Eucalyptus Mint.

$$ - MALIN + GOETZ
I first fell in love with Malin + Goetz while searching for a new face mask through their skincare line (More on that later). But they also make delicious and uniquely scented candles in two sizes. I had the pleasure of meeting one of their brand representatives here in LA, and he told me that their wax is all soy and vegetable based, which makes the chic glasses safe for drinking after the wax is burned out. (You can see I use my votive size as a mini planter for my succulent). $52 for a 9oz candle. Check out their Vetiver, Cannabis, and Dark Rum.

$$$ - diptyque
Finally, no candle-shopping guide is complete without diptyque. Loved by fashion editors, interior designers and bloggers alike for their sophisticated scents and chic packaging, these candles pack a serious punch - but not without a price. These are what you burn when you have company coming over and you want to impress. In-Laws, anyone? Truly, I haven't smelled a diptyque I didn't like, though my favorites at the moment are Feu de Bois, Vetyver, and Patchouli. Find them at Barney's for $60 for 6.5oz.

Try these out as you ease into spring and let me know if you discover any new favorite scents in the comments below. Enjoy your weekend! x

Shopping Day

Yesterday, a good friend of mine and I had the opportunity to go shopping for an upcoming project we're collaborating on. I can't say too much yet, but when I can - you'll be the first to know! But what I can tell you is, we got some really great finds. It was fun to take him out and explore the local fabric stores together, especially because it was his first time.

I know it can be overwhelming, but sometimes there's nothing better than really digging through the aisles at the fabric store - particularly when you're in need of a little inspiration. There's just so much to choose from, and you might be surprised what will catch your eye.

Check below for my outfit details (and where to shop them!) And don't forget to enter for our #MOGBLOG Giveaway!

Skincare Review: Kiehl's

Good morning, everyone! How are you all adjusting to this week? I'm still getting into the swing of things, myself. And whenever I feel restless in a weary world, I turn to skincare. Recently, I found myself in desperate need to stock up on the basics... so I headed to Kiehl's.

Lucky for me, from now until March 23rd, Kiehl's is running a promotion: 4 Deluxe Samples for any $65 purchase. (Unlucky for me, my night cream alone costs $62...but thats a different story.)

Let me tell you. These samples are worth it. See below for a review on each, with links for purchase. And, as always, don't forget to Subscribe to #MOGBLOG - if you aren't yet, you'll want to. Trust me. Big announcement coming this week!

Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate This stuff is the real deal. Loaded with 10.5% Vitamin C concentrate, you can actually feel it working on your skin. (Its a slight warming sensation, which I find pleasant. Just don't say I didn't warn you.)

Midnight Recovery Concentrate Let me take this time to note that I realize that most of the things on this list are anti-aging, but hey! I'm all about preventative, rather than reactive, skincare. Amirite?? Anyway. This serum is a sheer oil formula that smells heavenly and makes your skin feel like a dream.

Super Multi-Corrective Cream This rich, luxurious cream is actually what I use on my skin nightly. Its blend of ingredients is formulated to increase fullness, fight loss of elasticity, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. What's not to love?

Ultra Facial Cleanser Another product that I use on the daily. Just a really nice face cleanser - perfect if you have combination skin like me. Other cleansers leave me too oily or too dry, but this one is like Goldilocks - just right.

*BONUS* In-Flight Refreshing Facial Mist Okay, so this one wasn't a free sample, but I couldn't post a review on Kiehl's without writing about this. This is like the fountain of youth in a spray bottle. Designed to be a skin refresher mid-flight (which I've certainly used on that long cross-country flight home) I use it every day, throughout the day. Perfect when your skin is feeling dry, dull, oily, shiny, lackluster or just plain blah - basically, it'll cure what ails ya. It leaves your skin with a healthy, dewy finish. And, it smells incredible.

So thats it! Let me know if you get the chance to give any of these products a try. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Ides of March Heatwave

I dunno about the rest of the country, but here in LA it has been HOT all weekend. We were above 90 degrees the past couple of days. In march. Like, what? (At the risk of sounding unsympathetic... I realize that it is still quite chilly in many places. I did grew up on the east coast, you know. I get it.)

Here's my #OOTD solution for those in-between days. Easy. Relaxed. Casual. It'll keep you cool. (or warm, if need be.) Check below for links! And don't forget to Subscribe to #MOGBLOG with the link at the bottom of this post! exciting stuff planned this week!

Venice Beach Babe

Every now and then, something so ridiculously exciting happens, you can't wait to share it with the world. This is one of those times.

This week, myself, nick, and my dear friend, Casey Layne - yoga instructor, lululemon rep, blonde bombshell, and all-around babe - had the pleasure of working together on an exciting beach shoot. We wanted to do something that would show another side of her; something that marked a departure from her sunny, bubbly, adorable self.

So we went full on cool girl badass. Bye-bye yoga clothes, hello matching short suit. I shibori dyed this look by hand, starting with all white pieces. We even grunged up her hair with my custom blend sea salt spray.

Be sure to check back soon for a DIY on how we made this look come together!

hope you all enjoy looking at this shoot as much as we enjoyed making it! stay tuned for our upcoming DIY posts!
